He and ifeoma, his elder sister are sent home for non- payment of school fees. it grieves him that he could do nothing to complement his parents effort in training them. In the meantime, the lights capture him crying bitterly at the entrance of the school. Ubochi: Why do you shade tears like a crocodile? were you the only student sent home? Nroma: please, I don't need your company; am thinking of what to do to help my parents pay my school fees. Ebiri: A...ha..h! Dr chikaobi! Ubochi: Prof. Achebe! May i tell you that you don't have to die because of whiteman A B CH D? Ubochi: Not even one of them. Ebiri: No one stays at aa place to watch the masquerade. Ubochi: [Lends credeence to his proverbs] Yes, we all can not be chikaobi, Soyinka and Achebe. Eburi: Then we can devise our means of settling our school fees. Udoka: [ Now breaks his moment of silence] Yooo h, we can do it neatly! Ebiri: [ counts the gains] After our hit, wwe shall become millionaires overnight and exercise power; we shall play big boyism and drive the finest cars in school. The list is endless. Udoka: Don't you want to enrich yourself and live a pleasurable lifestyle? Aren't you the son of Okoro and Nneka, the poorest rats found in the church? Nroma: [Angrily respond] Poverty is transient and it is not stamped on the doorpost of any family forever. you whose parents are rich, why were you also sent home? Ebiri: Forget about the financial status of our parents. Now lets face the reality! What do you intend doing to ensure that your studentship is retained? Nroma: [ read their mind psychologically] I will go for odds jobs. Ebiri: Too long process! Ubochi: We need a quick means of settling our debts. Udoka: No! No!! Let's place it on the comparative degree- a quicker means! Ebiri: [ pats udoka on the back] Good ! what then do we do? Ubochi: We'll go round and tap other people's property and resell them at give- away prices. Udoka: We shall then bid bye bye to poverty. Ubochi: and its slavery. Ebiri: [ Addresses Nroma] How do we begin Nroma: please am not here to listen to your foolish and idle talks. i have many academic loads facing me. Ebiri: ( looks defeated) So? Nroma: You are a bundle of disappointments and a bunch of disgraces to your parents! you lack moral rectitude! Ebiri: You are speaking English when we are discussing business... Nroma: May you perish with your illicit business! we weren't brought up in an ungodly manner; we are contented with our low prestige. Ubochi: ( calms him) my guy, we are not quarrelling; we only want to help you and your family members come out of your apparent poverty. Nroma: Remove the stick in your eyes before helping another person to remove the more in his eyes. Udoka: My guy, shine your eyes ! A good opportunity is knocking at your door. Make effective use of it before it passes you by. Nroma: I rather advice you to desist from doing evil; the bible is against stealing; you will be caught one day. Ebiri: ( calls the attention of his two friends) leave him, he is not compatible with us. Udoka: He wants to become a professor. Ebiri: mere philosophers who only initiate theories but do not have money to support their philosophical ideas. Udoka: lets go for our business! Nroma ignores them and makes an onward movement to his parents house. Afterwards, he brainstorm on the next line of action to take. lights fade. Global House Of Literature
