The light focus on Nroma and Ifeoma, his elder sister going to school. The latter runs holding the right hand of the former. The two now disengage from each other. Nroma initiates a discussion. Nroma: ( Enquiries from his sister) Do pupils get flogged when they are laye to school? Ifeoma: (Answers affirmatively) Yes, including the noise makers. Nroma: Then what shall be my fate? Ifeoma: You had better tie your mouth with a rope so that you don't attract the wrath of your teachers. Nroma: Oh ! I'm finished Ifeoma: Don't take it to heart! Every discipline meted to you is geared towards fashioning out a seasoned professional. Nroma: i quite agree with you. I'll do my best to portray an impeccable character. Ifeoma: ( Gives him hope) We shall always push forward until victory is won. Nroma: ( he appears withdrawn at the moment) won't we be sent home today for non payment of school fees?. Ifeoma: (assures him) No we will not. Nroma: Are we the poorest among the pupils? Now watch: our hair is bushy, our school uniforms are torn; we waln bare footed to school and plantain leaves serves as an umbrella to us, i hope our poverty is not as such as a church rat. Ifeoma: Stop that! you don't need to compare yourself with another person; be contented with what you have, tomorrow is pregnant;who knows what it will bring for us? Do you believe that Joy comes in the morning?. Nroma: Yes, i do! Ifeoma: Then remove your eyes from your present predicament, the patient dog they say eats the fattest bone. In school, Nroma makes new friends: he joins his mates to tidy up the school premises. During break he plays with them. At the end of the day's academic activities, Dozieobodo, Nroma's primary one teacher, approaches him: Mrs Dozie: ( enquires) who are your parents? Nroma: ( is perturbed but later muscles up courage to answer the question) They are Mr and mrs Okoro of umunze. Mrs dozie: oh, I know them. you have started on a good note with time, you shall become a celebrity. Nroma: Why did you say so ma? Mrs dozie: you are academically sound . you performed well in all your assignment today. Nroma: poor me! thank you ma. Mrs Dozie: see! [she warns him ] do not be arrogant; always concentrate on your studies; do not be influenced negatively by keeping bad company; maintain your dignity and you shall laugh last. Nroma: Thank you once again . i promised not to disappoint my dogged determination; i must ensure that success is achieved throughout my stay in this school. Mrs Dozie: [compliment] i'm sure your parents will be happy to see all your workings marked excellent when you get home. Nroma: I hope so! Mrs. Dosie: [tests him] You studied six subjects today. Can you briefly tell me what you grasped from your social studies? Nroma: [Feels timid]E...m...! Mrs. Dozie: [urges him on] Go ahead! Don't be nervous. Nroma: I learnt that bribery, corruption, tribalism and discrimination are cankerworms that can destroy the fabric of any nation. Mrs Dozie: [commends him] correct English grammar! Nroma: [continues] You also thought us that we should build a national bridge that would embrace dialogue, unity, love and tolerance... didn't you take us on that? Mrs Dozie: i did oh, i'm enjoying your lecture; teach me the more! Nroma: I hope am presenting it the way you exactly taught us? Mrs Dozie: You are on the right track; go on! Nroma: Then you narrated a war story to us. you said that war leaves many people displaced, wounded, maimed, destabilized and dead. War should be better imagined that experienced. Finally, you advised us to avoid anything that would bring about an outbreak of war. Mrs Dozie: I am proud of you. Go back home to rehearse everything you studied. watch [ she points] Your sister, ifeaoma is waiting for you over there. Have a pleasant day ahead!. Nroma: ( responds) thank you! ( Almost immediately, he runs to meet with his sister who has been waiting for a while. they walk down home with victorious songs). lights fade.
